Jonathan Kamens<p>Last night for the first time in many years I went to someone else's <a href="https://federate.social/tags/Passover" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Passover</span></a> <a href="https://federate.social/tags/Seder" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Seder</span></a> (necessitated by staying behind when my wife and son went to visit Daughter # 2).<br>I was extremely anxious about talk at the Seder potentially degenerating into Zionist propaganda about <a href="https://federate.social/tags/Gaza" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Gaza</span></a>, but fortunately my fears were unfounded. In fact, one of the hosts argued that given what <a href="https://federate.social/tags/Israel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Israel</span></a> is doing, we should skip reciting "Pour Out Thy Wrath".</p>
Hebrew by Inbal<p>Tonight is ליל הסדר — Seder night.</p><p>A night of story, memory, freedom.</p><p>This video is from my last Seder in Israel — a table full of love, tradition, and meaning. I hold it close.</p><p>This year, I’m not at a public Seder. I’m sitting with memory. With family in my heart.</p><p>If you’re doing the same — I see you.</p><p>You don’t need a crowd to feel the magic. Just a heart open to the story.</p><p>May tonight bring freedom, peace, connection, and hope.</p><p>And may we remember the 59 hostages still in Gaza. May they come home soon.</p><p>חג פסח שמח 💙</p><p><a href="https://babka.social/tags/Passover" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Passover</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/seder" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>seder</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/freedom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>freedom</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/family" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>family</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/celebration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>celebration</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/holiday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>holiday</span></a></p>

This is a holiday with pretty strict dietary guidelines, as well as classic <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Seder" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Seder</span></a> preparation traditions, and for that reason, planning and <a href="https://babka.social/tags/cooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cooking</span></a> for the holiday takes on a higher level of focus and preparation.</p><p>Home <a href="https://babka.social/tags/chefs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>chefs</span></a> may start shopping, cooking, and planning their <a href="https://babka.social/tags/menu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>menu</span></a> weeks in advance—and the same can be said for celebrity chefs who happen to be Jewish.</p><p>But with so much <a href="https://babka.social/tags/culinary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>culinary</span></a> traditions intertwined in this holiday's observance, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that many chefs have a specific family dish that has remained a star of the Seder for generations."</p><p><a href="https://www.southernliving.com/chef-favorite-passover-foods-11688490" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">southernliving.com/chef-favori</span><span class="invisible">te-passover-foods-11688490</span></a></p>

In this <a href="https://babka.social/tags/seder" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>seder</span></a> tutorial, Pastor Scott Stewart of Agape Church of Little Rock, Ark., explains how to celebrate <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Passover" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Passover</span></a>, with barely any recognition that this is a <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Jewish" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Jewish</span></a> holiday. It felt like Stewart was even telling <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Jews" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Jews</span></a> the proper way to lead a Passover seder.</p><p>However, other Christian seders focus on exploring the Jewish roots of <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Christianity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Christianity</span></a>. It’s a “cumulative” song about a baby goat that is eaten by a cat, who’s killed by a dog, who’s beaten with a stick, culminating with the Angel of Death being slain by God. One interpretation is that the goat represents the Jewish people, and the climax of the song signals the redemption of the <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Jews" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Jews</span></a>. Maimonides<p>It is a positive commandment of the Torah to relate the miracles and wonders wrought for our ancestors in Egypt on the night of the 15th of Nissan, as it is written (Exodus 13:3): "Remember this day when you left Egypt," similar to the obligation (Exodus 20:8): "Remember the Sabbath day."</p><p>How do we know this is on the night of the 15th? This is taught by the words (Exodus 13:8): "And you shall tell your child on that day, saying: 'It is because of this..." which indicate it is to be done at the time when matzah and marror are placed before you.</p><p>This mitzvah applies even when one does not have a child to tell. Even wise sages who know it well are obligated to tell about the Exodus from Egypt. Whoever elaborates upon the events which transpired is worthy of praise.</p><p>(Mishneh Torah, Chametz and Matzah 7:1)<br><a href="https://babka.social/tags/Maimonides" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Maimonides</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/MishnehTorah" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MishnehTorah</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Passover" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Passover</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Pesach" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pesach</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Exodus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Exodus</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Seder" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Seder</span></a> <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Haggadah" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Haggadah</span></a></p>
