Update on the #GNOME "suspended" window state not firing when obscuring windows: it turns out to be multiple bugs :blobsweats:

* The bug affecting #GNOMEWeb / #WebKitGTK presumably remains a #Mutter bug in handling subsurfaces: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/

* The heisenbug part of the issue I was seeing where even gnome-system-monitor was not responding to obscuring surfaces turns out to be caused by the "Dim Background Windows" extension for #GNOMEShell … I reported it here: github.com/stephane-13/gnome-s

Oh great, I seem to have found a heisenbug in #Mutter's handling of obscured windows for emitting the "suspended" state (i.e. to allow apps to throttle themselves and save power when they are hidden by another window on top of them): gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/

It seems to happen randomly, but it might explain some cases where power savings in #GNOME are not as good as they could be.
What's really weird is that #WebKitGTK seems to encounter an additional bug on top of that, where it isn't random.

After GNOME 48's dynamic double/triple buffering, what I'm really looking forward to see, eventually, is #Mutter being able to recover from GPU state resets: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/

On Linux, the open source AMDGPU graphics drivers in #Mesa are infamous for making everything lock up in your face like that.

I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping this will happen by the time distros collectively ditch X11 in favor of #Wayland.

Do you know the "center new windows" option in GNOME Tweaks and Refine? (which change the Mutter "center-new-windows" dconf setting to "true")

If so, it will now be enabled by default (and improved, because all the requirements have been met).

Time to let the cat out of the bag.

I've been working on a new app to use your #Linux phones and tablets as secondary wireless "side displays" (not mirrors). This is based on #GStreamer, x264, #Mutter APIs, and low-latency UDP streaming, and will be designed to work on both ARM and Intel, regardless of hardware acceleration support. (Testing on a #librem5)

This is still at an early stage, and will take some time to become usable. Thoughts and feedback?
