Elle a en tous cas, cette histoire, un début. Et ce commencement n’a rien à voir avec la religion ou je ne sais quelle différence ethnique.Il commence durant les 25 années qu’a duré le mandat britannique, de 1923 à 1948. Des années de persécutions des populations, aussi bien arabes que juives, d’une violence parfois extrême (entraînant évidemment des réponses parfois tout aussi violentes). Persécutions économiques, physiques, psychologiques. Les colons britanniques se comportent là-bas comme ils l’ont toujours fait, ailleurs – et continueront de le faire jusqu’aux derniers feux de l’Empire. Le dernier génocide commis par un Empire européen sera de leur fait, au Kenya, à l’encontre des Mau Mau (Kikuyu), entre 1952 et 1960 (une centaine de milliers de morts selon Caroline Ekins, et plus de 300 000 détenus dans des camps qui n’ont rien à envier aux camps de concentration (lire : Imperial Reckoning : The Untold Story of Britain’s Gulag in Kenya, Henry Holt, 2005.)Les anciennes puissances impériales, commentant l’acte de guerre lancé par le Hamas, s’empressent de dé-contextualiser et surtout de dés-historiciser « l’évènement ». Wounded patients were overwhelming the region’s barely functioning health-care system. I was expecting to hunker down in a single hospital and spend two weeks helping to treat them. Instead, when I arrived, Israeli forces had withdrawn from parts of Gaza, air strikes had largely stopped, and displaced families were returning to places they had fled. This meant that our view was not limited to the inside of one building. I would get an unusually complete picture of the state of Gaza’s medical infrastructure.We spent the night at Nasser Hospital, a five-story beige-and-brown building in Khan Younis. As we drove up to it, a bystander, recognizing us as aid workers, shouted a plea through the window of our van: “Stay with us! Don’t just come and leave. Humanity is happening here!” Nasser had been the site of a major attack in February, 2024, when the Israeli military—the I.D.F.—shelled the hospital, cut off its power and oxygen, and raided the building.
