I wrote out my #selfhosting #photos setup for my friend @ketumbra and thought it might be useful for some people here to help #boycottUSA #degoogle & leave #BigTech
Something that makes it clear how much value the #broligarchy can extract from your photos is this demo website from #ente @ente showing exactly how much #google extract about you and your family when you use their photo hosting on #googlephotos : https://theyseeyourphotos.com/

After a re-setup of my #homelab server with #truenas I finally have #nextcloud up and running again.
In the past I used Nextcloud Photos to backup my phone but now moved to #immich. Now finally can also move all my #googlephotos to my private cloud
Just triggered the export of the photos ;-)
Again one small stepp away from google and co!
@ente wants to take on #GooglePhotos with its #privacy-first photo storage service
https://techcrunch.com/2025/04/01/ente-wants-to-take-on-google-photos-with-its-privacy-first-photo-storage-service/ @itsfoss @omgubuntu @techlore hi. This looks very promising to me. Robust feature set for a V1. Thank you! #opensource #privacy #googlephotos
draft - Google Photos -
Could we also get an option something to the effect of like:
"disable this Google Photos Account on this device." or something to that effect, so when you select that specific Google account in Google photos it would just display a big lock icon and say something like "this account is disabled on this device. If you would like to enable it, you may do so in settings" or something to that effect.
#googlephotos #cybersecurity #datasegregation
edit - private space on android kind of solves the issue in the default user space, but for those of us who make a dedicated alt user for ourselves, in addition to using private space to access *some* of the alt profile when logged into the default user, when we log out of the default user and into one of our alt users logged into our alt google account, there's no way to setup private space in another user. on pixel, private space works great in the default user. but it would really seal the deal if they would bring the ability to setup private space when logged into a second user. even if they don't want to bring it to more than 2 users, 2 users would be better than 1, and I think would solve the majority of issues.
but, since private space is not an option in the second user, then if Google photos could just have an option in the app to do something to the effect of like "disable this account on this device" for better peace of mind when it comes to data segregation etc... that way we could still access Gmail, Google Chat, Gemini, etc, apps that aren't as worrisome from a data segregation standpoint because they don't really have like an "auto-upload" feature. i'm not saying that's a bad feature. its good and works well. i'm just saying from a data segregation standpoint, I think its disconcerting that there's not an option to the effect of ... "disable Google photos for this account on this device".
so I wonder if I should add the #privatespace hashtag since its kind of related. i'd take both solutions - both "private space" but ALSO the ability to "disable Google photos for this account on this device".
I installed Docker on a laptop so I could use #Immich, because #Nextcloud Photos is slow and keeps getting my IP addy softbanned from my new non-US shared hosting.
I was nervous.
But it was very easy.
It pulled Immich!!
I added my first folders of images... It was FAST! AND IT'S PRETTY!!
Hurrah!
Please note, this stuff didn't exist when I was a youngling and I am not a coder.
@pjf thankyou so much for mentioning it a little while back. I didn't realise Docker was so easy.
Next to get everything off of #GooglePhotos, get my phone sending everything to Immich, and learn & make backups of all on a Raspberry Pi!
#unplugtrump
God I’m getting old. A stupid question: I’m currently getting rid of Google Photos by downloading my archive. I want try to Immich but I’ve noticed it’s says self hosting and I’m to old and dumb to get in all that.
What’s the difference between self hosting a server and keeping your data on an external SSD for example? Access and use of use I presume?
Recently the Dwarflab app got a very interesting update in the beta stream. But not for telescope control - no this is in the album side. It now has options to upload your images to temporary AWS nodes for automated reprocessing. Star de-trailing, full star removal, and advanced denoising.
Most of these can be handled by well-known and publicly available neural networks, which is probably what these tiny AWS nodes are running.
The real fun, though, begins when you combine the results.
In this shot, I have taken the starless version, and added to it a heavily darkened an contrasted denoised version. This has the effect of reducing the stars, while maintaining the details of the nebula.
A bit of deblurring and sharpening, and this is the result.
C72, The Eta Carinae Nebula, Dwarf3, 60x90s@80, OIII/SII filter. Recomposed to reduce stars, and post processed in Google Photos.

@ente So glad I found your photo service.
I completed my #GooglePhotos #Takeout and have upload my entire #Photography library to https://ente.io. Used delete duplicates to clean up my collection. I found the facial recognition to be very accurate. Object recognition quite good too.
If you are looking for a secure, #e2e private cloud storage service for your #SilentSunday and other #photos that is not #Google, I'd suggest giving #Ente a try!
Another excellent project that will help us get away from #gafam #google #meta is the excellent #selfhosted replacement for #googlephotos
Now supported by https://futo.org/ which you may recognize from some of their awesome applications such as #grayjay #futokeyboard etc
Check out #Immich latest development Q&A video on FUTO's official #peertube channel which you can follow directly from the #fediverse

New experiment: delete all of the stock apps (File manager, gallery, video player, music player, etc.) from my #Android phone (a #Realme C55) and replace them with #FOSS alternatives from #Fdroid and #IzzyOnDroid :
- File manager -> File Explorer
- Photos and video player -> #AvesLibre
- Music player -> #Gramophone
- Google Contacts -> #Fossify Contacts
I've deleted #GooglePhotos too, since I'm going to use #Filen_io and #Megasync for that purpose.
These #GooglePhotos alternatives offer tons of storage options at a reasonable price
Anyone have experience with #ente photo storage? I'm looking for a way to leave #GooglePhotos. I like that #ente is #OpenSource. Anyone in the #Photography world (or beyond) have personal experience with https://ente.io?
Techie people. I have spent hours curating albums in Google Photos. Is this app one that is open to collecting data like Google browser is? I don't want to switch and start over, but I will if the answer is yes.
Yritän siirtää kuviani Google Photosista NextCloudiini. Kuten voi arvata, Google tekee tämän hyvin hankalaksi.
Nextcloudiin on saatavana integraatio Googlen alustaan, mutta kuvien tuonti tätä kautta katkeaa toistuvasti mystiseen virheeseen Googlen päässä. Hetznerin tyypitkään eivät osaa sanoa mistä on kyse.
Jos yritän ottaa tiedostot "takeoutina", tuloksena on 250 n. 4 gigan tiedostoa, yli 900G, vaikka kuvieni koko Googlen levyllä on vain toistasataa gigaa.
I'm decentralizing my #social #media.
Email/Calendar: #Proton.me
Browser/Search Engine: #DuckDuckGo
Social Media: #BlueSky & #Mastadon ( #Pixelfed)
TikTok Replacement: #Xiaohongshu
#Spotify Replacement: #SoundCloud
Now to further #decentralize my technology & #media from corrupt/lobbying entities, I need to get #GooglePhotos / #GSuite out of the mix.
Any #suggestions?
