The hard part is that Google still is the largest contributor to Android by a large margin. The ROM projects have started to work together, but not enough to get community control. The <a href="https://social.librem.one/tags/CalyxOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CalyxOS</span></a> team has put quite a bit of effort into trying to get this idea going. The key would be to get companies to switch to a community-controlled version, e.g. Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, etc.</p>

Voxel<p>I'm glad that I have a <strong>Google Pixel 8a</strong> and not a older model. There have been <strong>many</strong> reports of Google Pixels exploding! It's horrendous. The phone call would always be at the very top of the notification shade (IIRC), and would be highlighted green or something.</p><p>At least on the <a href="https://polymaths.social/tags/android" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Android</span></a> build I'm on, the phone call is either tiny, or just not listed in the notification shade at all. When you're on the lockscreen, you <em>must</em> get <em>out</em> of the notification shade to answer the phone.</p><p>When your phone is unlocked, you have to use the notification shade to get to the call (and it's not prominent!!), because opening the phone app JUST OPENS THE PHONE APP, and doesn't take you to your call at all.</p><p>It might just be an <a href="https://polymaths.social/tags/aosp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AOSP</span></a> thing or possibly just a <a href="https://polymaths.social/tags/calyxos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CalyxOS</span></a> thing, I don't know.</p><p>I'll have to test it now, I'm curious.</p>

Not sure what else there is out there. Being bitten by LineageOS ending support multiple times I would like to avoid that...</p><p>Asking because lots of older family members are using low-price devices (100-200€) and can't afford a pixel or similar (even if it lasts several years longer). Same with kids in the family, where the devices are not handled like I want a 600€ telephone to be handled :-)</p>
