Despite the almost contemporary world, the speculative nature of the setting permeates every aspect of the novel. It is not just a veneer. Sheridan Le FanuI listened to the Audible dramatization, featuring some impressive actors.Carmila was surprisingly sexy-lesbian for a late 19th century work. It was interesting to read a pre-Dracula vampire story. The christian elements are more muted and the victim isn't tainted by sin.PS. I was introduced to Carmila by the Wizards vx. Lesbians podcast. Quote:I am three thousand percent NOT INTERESTED in this.For a few reasons:1) If I want an audiobook of any of my work, I would very much prefer to pay an actual live narrator for it. I write fantasy. My work involves multiple situations where different accents would be called for, and multiple unusual names and translated terms.
